Decision Made…

Stirling O’Hanluan

Nollaig O’ Hanluan

Grateful to have the ear of several respected breeders from the KBT community, I have had the opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of several worthy studs for Nollaig.  I have learned a lot from the process.  After much research and consideration, I have settled upon breeding Nollaig with my very own Stirling O’Hanluan.  It was not a quick decision to breed my two together.  My modus operandi is to make everything as hard a possible; and this has not been that.  But since I asked experienced people for their advice, it has made sense to listen and heed their direction.  Their freely offered time and wisdom is priceless.  Words may never adequately convey my appreciation.

Thus settled upon, I am all in.

The Making of a New Champion…

Traveling with Dogs requires a lot of muscle and faith...Honestly, I spent my last dime to get to the Kerry Blue Terrier Club of Chicago Specialty in hopes of finishing Nollaig.  And once again I am reminded to dream big, as dreams do come true.

Nollaig finished her AKC Championship with a 5-Point Major at the Independent Specialty and earned a 5-Point Major towards her Grand Championship at the Concurrent Specialty; all of this after earning 13 points in Group 1 placements at our 2018 All-Breed Dog Shows here in Alaska.  I guess I am not the only one who thinks Nollaig is pretty special.

Now we are home safe and sound.  I look like the Wild Woman of Borneo and do not feel compelled to confirm this with a picture.

Before arriving home, we picked up Aoife from Mark’s where she stayed with the -dales and had a marvelous time with outdoor’s adventures.  Mark is so good with her, and Aoife loves him endlessly so I never worry when I have left her behind.

Kerries can pitch a fit when a pack is re-united after an adventure such as this.  But I have established a pattern; and the girls accepted one another with a wag of tail and lots of friendly ‘missed-you sniffs’.  Allow me to suggest there are mechanics for the successful reunion of a pack.  It can be so easy, but method matters a lot.  …We need to talk about this sort of thing a whole lot more.

The Kerry Blue Terrier Club of Chicago put on another phenomenal Specialty!  The venue was comfortable and easy to access.  The members provided hospitality that made travelers feel like treasured friends.  Judge Richard Miller & Judge Jay Richardson obviously enjoyed their assignment, careful to honor each entry with a careful look.  The photographer had a nice setup, and I am looking forward to receiving the photos.  And the prizes were something to covet, and ours will be treasured for years to come.

Dare I Say Sacred…

Dog fancy has pulled me out of the comfort zone called home to visit several regions of the country to connect for breed competition.  It has been my pleasure, for every place we have gone we have received a warm welcome.

From my observation, I have got to say the Kerry community is quite remarkable.  Kerry people are as sweet, friendly, loyal, intense and passionate as their beloved Kerry dogs.  And, hackles up where there is the perception of values compromised.  Though the framing of those values may look slightly different from one person to the next, at the core I believe it is very much the same.  Our kerry dogs are special [dare I say sacred], and woe to any other soul thought to exploit them.

But wait; Our strengths are in our differences.  We do not each have to approach this endeavor in exactly the same manner to be true to the breed.  It seems to me that insistence on one right way creates divisive animosity, which cannot be good for anyone.  As an idealist, I believe we would benefit from internalization of this simple truth.

……Our last journey was met with the makings for great memories.  Yes, this was exactly what one would hope for from an extended journey bridging 3 times zones.  Many thanks to the kind members of the Kerry Blue Terrier Club of Chicago for a warm reception, great venue, and for sending me home with my new Grand Champion!

Crowned in Triple Blues…

Standing on the travel crate that served as our grooming table, Stirling casually yawned as we stood ringside waiting for the Best In Show competition on the last day of the Fairbank’s cluster.  Sasha, a kerry-man and acquaintance we see annually at this show, asked in a hushed tone whether we might ought to work Stirling up a bit.  I shrugged, and mumbled that would likely not be necessary.

Soon enough it was our turn.  …Twice in a row actually, as the National Owner Handler Series Best In Show competition directly preceded the regular Best In Show competition; and we were in both…

Upon entering the ring Stirling came alive and showed his heart out.  Another deserving team was awarded Best In Show.  But I am sure Stirling’s terrier antics were highly entertaining.

And I could not be prouder of my boy crowned in triple blues!

Dream-Come-True…

Being my sister’s birthday, July 25th has always been a memorable date.  But on that date of this particular year one of my dreams came true…

Judge Dana P Cline awarded CH Stirling O'Hanluan BEST IN SHOW at the Cook Inlet Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show in Palmer, Alaska on July 25, 2015

The whole experience is sort-of-a blur to me now, and even at the time it had a surreal feel.  But I still have tiny bruises from pinching myself so many times, as well as the photos ribbons & prizes that prove it was not just a dream; but, a Dream-Come-True.

Judge Dana Cline points at Stirling O'Hanluan... My face says, "Wait! Can I believe my eyes?!!"

A handshake? ...This calls for a hug!!

The Dream-Come-True was bittersweet…

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY

Sharing The Dream-Come-True …with you!  It is my pleasure…

It is my pleasure to share this Dream-Come-True with breeders Jana Deaton and Lois Grier via Timothy D Johnson.  Thank you both so much for your hard work and dedication to our breed, and for entrusting me with this wonderful dog.

So too, this Dream-Come-True is enthusiastically shared with my dear friend Christie Simantel-Janusiesicz who has selflessly found mentoring-time for us in the midst of life-its-own-self,  without whom Ms. Two-Left-Feet (not mentioning any names here) would never have made it around the conformation show ring.

It is also fitting and proper to share this Dream-Come-True with Lynda Barber-Wiltse, another dear friend and a dedicated canine-sports performance guru, who has provided invaluable insight into the human-canine relationship.

It was a pleasure to share The Dream with all the exhibitors and spectators on the day of the event.  Your support was overwhelming!

MANY THANKS  …to the Cook Inlet Kennel Club for hosting this spectacular event,  …to Meg of Calleafoto for the photo memories,  …to Jeanne & Roger Hale for the NOHS Terrier Group 1 Gifts,  …to Carolyn & Tom Tolson for the Terrier Group 1 Gifts,  …and to Debi & Tim Okonek for the generous Best In Show “Trophy”.

A BIG SHOUT OUT TO JUDGE DANA P CLINE who definitely made our day!!!

Lastly, but never least, Stirling & I share this Dream-Come-True with Mark and the rest of the pack without whom there would be little point.  I Love You!

The Kerry Community, My Thoughts On…

kbt-emptyMy impression of our breed and the people who cherish it has changed markedly over time, and I believe I have come upon a truth worth sharing.

My Changing View…

My first impression was largely one of wonderment and awe, as never having seen anything more delightful than the Kerry Blue Terrier and the lucky few who treasured them!

On First Glance:

Here was a golden community enamored with an elegant & extraordinary breed of dog.

IDevil Dogsn time that first impression of holy perfection evolved into a certain undeniable truth about the breed: Kerries are of the world and perfectly imperfect in their being.  Indeed, Kerries are capable of inciting a devilish mess.  This too, is true of their people.    …With the use of social media one can quickly get a sense of the collective character of any group or community; so too, of the Greater Kerry Community.  Sometimes as I watch the manner in which we communicate, I am taken aback by the seemingly harsh tones.  At times, without knowing, it would be hard to tell whether the evidenced factions are of the same interest group…

On Second Look:

Here was a loose-knit bunch of scrappers with an ivy league veneer.

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-images-dogs-heart-shape-illustration-terriers-schnauzer-making-image40919214

Well, it is true that members of the Kerry Community do not always see eye-to-eye.  In fact, here is a group that can pretty much be counted on for a heated debate.  And it is obvious that the minds seldom sway, as not one will budge from their steadfast position.  Objectively speaking, in no way can we all be right all the time.  Yet it is in the passionate commitment to our truths that we manifest our shared bond.  And herein lies the commonality of our community, and out of that springs the diversity in our breed.

The Invested View:

Here is a bona fide community of ardent individuals committed to the betterment of a hearty intelligent breed of terrier; if all words here are true, the underlying operative words are “ardently committed”

Now I am sure you have heard it said that our “strengths lie in differences, not similarities.”  …But can it be that the recognition of an inherent similarity could better prepare us to learn from our differences?

…Let us each tip one’s hat to the other.
